ON THE RISE

Cremation

The process of cremation has been around for thousands of years. For health and expediency reasons, cremation was the predominant means of disposition of the dead in Greece, by the year 1,000 BC. It was not until the spread of Christianity, during the height of the Roman Empire, that full body burial became prevalent. It was not until one hundred years after the birth of the United States of America that the first cremation took place on American soil. The first crematorium in Cincinnati,The Hillside Chapel, was constructed by the Cincinnati Cremation Company between 1885 and 1888. This site still stands today on Martin Luther King Drive.

In America today, over 60% of families are choosing cremation for the final disposition of a loved one. Many conversations have taken place over the reason for this exponential increase. Cultural norms, religious views, environmental issues, and finances are just a few cited reasons for the growth.

Many families are faced with the daunting choice of what happens next, when there are no plans in place. What are the options for the final resting place of cremains? The Vine Street Hill Cemetery is pleased to offer in-ground cremation burials, indoor and outdoor columbaria niches, and options for the rite of second inurnment. Families can choose to set up a payment plan to defer out of pocket costs.
